What is a magnet school?
A magnet school is a public school which offers a special theme-based curriculum to suburban and urban students in a diverse setting. There is no tuition to attend and transportation is provided to most students. All students must apply through the Regional School Choice Office. At the Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker, students are engaged in a rigorous, relevant curriculum which integrates the environmental sciences through the following over-arching goals:

We service students in Prek ages 3 and 4 through 8th grade.

Will my child only be taught science?
No. Our curriculum is comprehensive and students receive a core curriculum that is aligned to state standards. Students study reading, math, social studies and science. Students receive instruction in these areas above the time requirements outlined by the state including a two and a half hour language arts block and a 75 minute math block daily. Students receive approximately 7.5 hours of science instruction weekly.

What are the school hours?
The official school day starts at 8:45 am and ends at 3:40 pm. Students may come into the building starting at 8:15 am for breakfast.
How does my child get to and from school?
If your child resides in Hartford, is in grades K-8, and lives outside of the district’s walking distance, he/she will receive transportation through the Hartford Public School System. More information is available at the website: www.hartfordschools.org
If your child lives outside of Hartford, Regional School Choice Office (RSCO) provides transportation services for students in grade K-8, within the RSCO transportation Zone. The zone is a designated geographic area which contains specific towns and cities. A map of the RSCO Transportation Zone is available on the RSCO website: www.choiceeducation.org/transportation.
Pre K students are not eligible for transportation services and must be transported to school daily.
Is lunch provided?
Lunch is provided at no charge for the 2011-2012 school year.
Is there before and after school care?
Before and after school care is provided on site by OPMAD (Organized Parents Make a Difference). Before school care starts at 7:30 a.m. and after school care runs until 6:00 p.m. There is a charge for before and after school care services. For more information please call 860-416-8870.
