JaimeLynn Drake SGC Parent Chair

I was first introduced to ESM when my husband and I began looking for a place for our twin boys to attend Kindergarten. We visited ESM and immediately knew this is where we wanted them to be. We are currently enjoying our fourth year at ESM (our third grade year). Since the boys began at ESM we have been impressed with what they have learned and how they have grown, ESM has given them so much. The school truly is a community: filled with teachers, staff, students, and parents. As a community we work hard to set high expectations for ourselves, and to achieve them. The school allows students to learn in unique and fun ways, there are opportunities for community involvement and of course for parents to be involved too. Through my work with the SGC I have been able to see the true magnificence that is ESM, and as a team, the SGC strives to maintain the high levels of quality and commitment we presently have.

Karen Ennen SGC Parent Member

I am the proud parent of Zack, a 7th grader here at ESM. This is our fourth year at ESM and my third year as a parent representative on the Governance Council. We were invited to a RSCO recruitment fair by a friend, not even looking for a new school, when we found ESM. We attended an Open House at the school and never looked back. The dedicated teachers, staff, students and community members truly makes ESM one of the best Magnet Schools around. ESM has been a great experience for our son and our entire family and joining the SCG was my way to give back for all that we have received.

Antonio Rivera SGC Parent Member

I am a parent of two children who proudly attend Environmental Sciences Magnet School at Mary Hooker. I believe that the goal of a quality education is to provide our children with the foundation that will empower them to follow their passions. This is a responsibility shared equally by teachers, parents, and students. Professionally, I am an Aerospace Engineer at Sikorsky Aircraft with 14 years of experience. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Project Management. As a member of the governance council my goal would be to leverage my problem solving skills and business acumen to help ESM exceed its Mission statement, “to ensure that all students attain high academic achievement through theme-based programs and instruction in a safe, responsive learning community.”

I am proud mother of two students and we are lucky to call ourselves an ESM family now for 5 years. My husband and I were thrilled when our children received spots at ESM, as our local school was not giving science much emphasis. We recently moved and are enjoying getting to know our community, while thrilled we had the stability of keeping our children in the school environment that they love. Due to my daytime work schedule I’ve not be able to volunteer as much time as I’ve wanted to for ESM in the classrooms and therefore am thrilled to be able to participate more in our school community through SGC. I am hopeful that this opportunity to sit on the SGC will allow me to participate in the betterment of our school for our children and continue the promotion of ESM in our community.

Kathy Evans SGC Community Member

I am pleased to be part of the ESM community and to serve on the School Governance Council. I live in Hartford and work as the Program Development Director for Organized Parents Make A Difference (OPMAD), the Before and After school provided for ESM and three other schools in Hartford. I am a founding member of the organization along with 7 other Hartford parents. OPMAD’s goal is to address the out of school needs of elementary school children and their families. I became increasingly involved in parent and public education issues when my twin daughters entered kindergarten at Batchelder School. My tenure as Batchelder’s PTO President inspired me to become an elected member of the Hartford Board of Education. I am currently on the Board of Directors of the Southwest and Behind the Rocks Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (NRZ). I have a Masters degree in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame.

When Mrs. Carter was little, she loved getting the used workbooks at the end of the year from my teachers. She would take them home and play teacher with my dolls and my friends. Now, over 30 years later she continues to share her love of teaching with students. ESM @ Mary M. Hooker has gone through many changes, all of which she has been a part of. She has taught K-6, bilingual 3rd and combination classroom. Currently, She is the 5th grade EL teacher. In my spare time I enjoy reading, tennis, meditation, and Zentangle.
